I needed to cut a slit on the end of a pair of screws but I do not have a slitting saw so I improvised.
I clamped a hacksaw blade in a tool holder

I set it on the centre and by applying pressure with the saddle and drawing the cross slide back and forth I started the slit

It wasnt fast but it gave a good even saw cut

That I could finish by hand in the vice with the hack saw with no slipping or marring of the head.
It worked

As the old saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. Great workaround, Charles!

I have a mill and a slitting saw, but when I just want to slot the head of a screw and sometimes even a fussy one that needs to be pretty. I use this collet block that I made. I made it for other needs but while I was at it, I put two holes in it for guide pins. Now I can easily slot a screw head. Centering is controlled. Depth of slot is watching the blade. Works great!
