Title: Hi from North Iowa
Post by: KevinL on May 10, 2024, 12:05 PM
Good afternoon from North Iowa.  Been working metal for over 40 years now, and for the last 18 years being an instructor teaching general machinist and tool and die at NIACC in Mason City, IA.

Thinking more everyday about retirement and have been putting together my retirement shop.  I put up a 2000 sq' shop and have my woodworking, foundry, and my metal working equipment to play with.  Still looking for a knee mill.

Foundry?! Neat.
Welcome aboard. Certainly look forward to hearing/seeing photos of foundry work. I don't think we have anyone here who does that.

Welcome aboard.
Any particular make/model of knee mill you're looking for ?
I like shopping around for machines. never know when the steal of the century will present itself.
Looking at your avatar, wondered if you dabble with MSP ?

I suppose it doesn't help that I'm selling a knee mill way up here in Canadurp...

Welcome aboard Kevin! Being a machine shop instructor you've probably got more than your fair share of stories that you can share!

Uglydog (a member here) does foundry  stuff at his place up in Tamarack MN. I've been up there a couple of times and we work hard but we have a lot of fun. I am pretty sure that Daryl posted some photos of one if not multiple events on Machinist Gazette.

I also have some pics here and will start a new thread to post them since MG is now gone.

My avatar is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities. It came from one of the suppliers that serviced the community college that I work at.  Funny thing is I purchased my very first Starrett tool from this gentleman when I was in college back in 1982.

I saw the tool display stopping at his shop in Dubuque, Ia on the way back from IMTS one year.  Asked if he ever sold it, please remember me.  Fast forward a couple years and he called and offered to sell me the tools that he purchased at a supplier cost.  I said that would be great, but would really like the "box" as well.  He said that the box belong to Starrett and it needed to go back.....SO, he contacted Starrett and they said that they had no record of it, so keep it.  I have the letter!

Best $850 ever spent, and the collection stays together.

Ah, so it's a Starrett box and tools. At first glance it looked a bit like a Texas Inst MSP Launchpad board.
