Good morning afternoon evening.
My name is Stuart, also known as Heyou. I am a mechanical engineer, for which I apologize. I have been around machining in one form or another all my life but mostly as part of my job - i.e. buying stuff for my dastardly inventions - or otherwise as an observer. I was lucky enough to go to school at a time when machining and fabrication was still taught at a basic level from age 10 or so - so the interest has always been there. Home machining is a relatively recent thing which I wish I could have got into sooner. This started as just wanting to make small model engines, but then I got a job in a fabrication company and got more fascinated with machining technology so I have been "upping my game" in terms of machine capability.
Whether my own capability game has been upped or not remains to be seen, but I try. To be honest, that's really what it's all about - is just having a try at things and learning techniques along the way.
Looking forward to interaction - I have been on a few machinist forums but the interaction was always sparse. I am fully open to positive criticism and am not just interested in attaboys - so hope for some good discourse.
I screw a lot of stuff up and am not afraid to admit it. ;D
Cheers!
Welcome and might I add you've came to the right place.
Even though my father was a machinist for Caterpillar his whole working career and able to use their equipment for his projects, he had no interest in having a home shop.
So in short, my initial interest and education about machining came from high school shop class until I decided to jump in myself with the help and guidance from members of the old MG site, some of which have joined this one with the loss of the old site.
Pretty much everyone here is more than willing to share their opinions and/or expertise.
Welcome aboard my friend. I hope you find this place to be to your liking. We are not huge, but I think we are in a much better place than Machinist Gazette was.
Hey You:
Sounds like a good name. Welcome aboard.
