Title: New chuck for my lathe
Post by: TerryWerm on Nov 10, 2024, 02:23 PM
I have a Logan model 200 lathe, 10x24. She was made on July 7, 1941 and was originally sold to Char-Lynn Corporation in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. My grandfather worked for Char-Lynn as a machinist after WWII so it is entirely possible that he operated that very lathe at one point during his career.

It is a change gear machine, which I sometimes grumble about since there is no quick change gear box. But, change gears gives me far more flexibility and even enabled me to cut a helix in a piece of 1/2" pipe to make a special tool a few years ago by gearing for one thread every two inches. Let's just say that it was an interesting project that turned out better than I expected.

The lathe originally came with a Cushman 5" 3 jaw chuck and that poor thing has led an eventful life. It shows evidence of damage over the years and a couple of repairs. Needless to say it is NOT a very good chuck at this stage of its life. Fine for rough work but little else. So, several years ago I ordered a 6" three jaw chuck with reversible jaws from Shars and have been very happy with it. It shows very little runout and is great for most projects, but there are times where a 5" chuck would be far more appropriate. Even a 3" 3 jaw can be appropriate at times for that matter.

I was perusing Facebook Marketplace one day and stumbled upon a Kalamazoo 5" three-jaw chuck with T-handle chuck key and both sets of jaws on a 1-1/2"-8 backplate for $165 shipped. A little research showed that a brand new chuck and backplate from Shars would have cost slightly more, but I was happy paying this price for some good old American made iron, so the deal was struck and I now have it in my hands. It is in excellent condition and is stamped on the back with "11 73".  I do not know if this is the date it was originally purchased or not, but I am tickled to death with it and it will be a wonderful addition to my tools for the lathe.

Of course our boxer, Quinn, had to get in one pic too.
