Title: 6063 aluminum info
Post by: Piggiron on Jun 12, 2024, 09:48 AM
Looking for info and opinions on 6063 aluminum.
After shopping around for material for my "Canoe Catamaran" project (https://www.homemachinistsjournal.com/index.php?topic=120.0 (https://www.homemachinistsjournal.com/index.php?topic=120.0)), I can find no local suppliers for either 80/20 T-slot or 6061 square tubing. Shipping for online orders is ridiculous almost doubling the cost.
I found a couple local suppliers within easy driving distance, but the only square aluminum alloy tubing they carry is 6063.

I was hoping someone here has experience working with it.
Current plan will not require welding.
I'd rather use aluminum due to the desire for minimizing weight, but barring using 6063, I may have to consider using steel instead.

Looks like you really need to be using 6063, not 6061.

Thanks for the link Chips. I'll have to go check it out since the place I contacted is only about a 40 minute drive.
They quote me a price of $125 per 21' stick, but I didn't get a wall thickness.
